- Smith Hart tears into Dave Meltzer over the Mauro/JBL issue.
https://www.facebook.com/smith.hart.5/posts/1303951583021379
A controversial issue that has made headline news as of late, seems to be the debate/saga surrounding Mauro Ranallo and John Layfield. As many may or may not know, we used Mauro as a commentator for Stampede wrestling in Calgary in his early days after he got started in BC for All Star Wrestling, and for a considerable amount of time, Mauro and my dear niece Jenny (sister of Natalya, daughter of Jim & Ellie) were a long-term item.

Frankly, what those complaining don’t seem to understand is the grind of being on the road. Wrestlers in the WWE spend anywhere from 200-300 days a year on the road away from their families. It is not a normal lifestyle by any stretch of the imagination. It is not much different than the type of environment of being in a high school boys football locker room. If WWE’s corporate culture was to crack down on this level of behavior then you would see a higher level of over-entitled wimps cracking under the pressure and going home ala CM Punk. Without the ability to blow off steam, this level of lifestyle is not sustainable by anyone. So if the talents don’t blow off steam, with some fun, they cant be on the road full time. If they cant be on the road full time, they don’t make a full time living. If they don’t make a full time living the WWE cant sustain business. And if the WWE cant sustain business the business as a whole crashes. If WWE’s corporate culture cracked down on all ribs and said no more practical jokes or hazing as gossip mongers like Meltzer have dubbed it, then a line would get drawn in the sand that make it all business and no fun. No off time with friends, no family time and no road fun with the boys. That is a dangerous recipe.

I dont agree with this. I think Dave does wrestling a solid.
I dont always agree with his opinions but i think he's the only credible journalist who doesnt see wrestling as a fake sport and reviews it seriously for what the wrestlers do and psychology they use. Wrestling fans just get too attached to something they like but i think Dave overall is great for wrestling. and saying bullying isn't wrong because its common in wrestling isn't a great argument.
The night brims with defiled scum, and is permeated by their rotten stench.
Just think. Now you're all set to hunt and kill to your heart's content. |
if Dave Meltzer retired today or never covered WWE again, not only would it not impact WWE a fraction negatively, I would argue that their business would double as would the income of many of its talents, as Dave’s lies and gossip have done more irreparable harm to wrestling than all other dirt sheet gossip queens combined.
This guy literally thinks WWE and wrasslers would earn double what they currently are if Meltzer stopped covering wrestling. LOL |
His opinion on the issue has no merit. He admittedly does not know JBL personally. JBL is known for sucking up to people with a higher position than he does, so of course the likes of Bruce Prichard, Jim Cornette, Jim Ross, Vince McMahon, and Helen Hart don't have a problem with him. And guys like Mr. Perfect, or even Owen Hart don't have the kind of reputation JBL does. Let's not act like everyone ribs the same way.
And for some reason, he feels the need to include CM Punk in the conversation. It's almost like he's purposely trying to court some type of controversy. |
Dave further lamented that he said if WWE doesn’t implement some discipline against JBL for this issue, that he hoped for harm against the WWE. This is a vengeful comment for someone who clearly feels his opinions supersede WWE’s business. But the short-sighted absurdity of it astonishes me. Without WWE in business Dave would be on welfare begging for bread crumbs. UFC already has the much more credible Ariel Helwani and the remainder of the wrestling business doesn’t have enough sustainability without WWE being in business that he would have no one reading his opinions on shows that sell 50 tickets. And since he has spent his entire adult life making a career out of selling his opinions of WWE as ground-breaking news, he has no credibility or real life experience to ever get another job outside of working at the counter at McDonalds or as a Wal-Mart greeter the rest of his life. Why is this guy speaking as if he's done any better? Smith Hart is a nobody. |
He said CM Punk twice. Is he one of the phil s***posters from the board?
Also i like his whole 'blowing off steam' analogy lol. So blowing off steam because you're on the road all year is okay, but what about the ones also on the road all year getting the steam blown on to them? How do they blow off steam? Strangle a prostitute?

He said CM Punk twice. Is he one of the phil s***posters from the board? Exactly what I came in here to say. Throwing CM Punk and his personal history with Ranallo into his rant doesn't make his weird-ass analogy any more logical. What if, as a result of "blowing off steam", a talent had to no-show an event he was scheduled to wrestle at because he had to go make a new passport? Is management going to laugh and wave off the hassle of making last minute changes as "just letting people blow off steam"? Smith Hart is a complete idiot, a tryhard, and a tool.

By all accounts, it seems like Mr. Perfect was a sadistic scumbag, who did even worse things than JBL ever did, but got a pass for it because of his death and being a well-liked wrestling character. |

Lol, what? Most wrestlers don't "blow off steam" in the way that JBL does. I guess they can't be on the road? I can't believe he's making this argument. --- Sig |
So speaking as someone who actually listens to everything Dave has said... Smith Hart is outright lying about some of the stuff he's said. Dave never said that WWE was outdated and behind the times for WWE not caring about the Wrestling Observer Awards, he said that WWE is strange because Mauro got heat for thanking people for voting for him, and that WWE is the only company in the world that would punish and give a guy hell because he posted about a fan award he got. Dave also never said he hopes for harm against WWE if they don't punish JBL. He said that they ought to punish JBL, has spoken reasonably about the situation making news, and said that if they don't and this picks up more traction then chances are that it will reflect negatively on them, and ultimately JBL isn't the issue and it's more the mentality of those in charge. And Dave has always been incredibly humble. I really don't understand why he's acting like Meltzer has a giant ego.
He's also missing the difference between ribs and outright terrorizing people. Like, did he not actually look to see what some of these people he listed said about what JBL has done? If you look at any of that and say "Oh, it's just good natured ribbing to let off some steam" then you're just detaching yourself from reality.

So this smacks of somebody who has some personal issues with Mauro (maybe he had issues with him going way back to when he dated his niece), is jokeying to earn some brownie points with WWE (hey guys I'm defending you, any open slots for an agent maybe?) and trying desperately to be relevant (I said C.M. Punk's name; am I trending yet?)
I don't even feel like going into all the stupid in his arguments but when the bulk of the people who speak well of you are the guys you used to ride with and a bunch of promoters and bosses (i.e the guys giving him work) and the guys who speak poorly of you are fellow wrestlers and interviewers (i.e. guys lower on the totem pole) it's not hard to figure out what kind of person JBL is. Also the defense that it's ok cause he's just blowing off some steam and you're a whiner and a baby if you're not cool with eating that s*** all the time is stupid beyond belief. "Man, I could sure go for roofying a couple college girls and raping them while they're unconscious.....what? That's just how I blow off steam after being on the road for 2 weeks!"

This whole thing stinks of sucking up to WWE. His whole arguement seems to be that life on the road is hard so you might as well do a bit of bullying. Also that Bullying was great fun in the old days of wrestling, you gotta keep on bullying and if you dont like it you are a wimp.
Like who is this guy? What an idiot.

This is insane conjecture that makes no sense. Meltzer was around writing during both of wrestling's national booms. And since he has spent his entire adult life making a career out of selling his opinions of WWE as ground-breaking news, he has no credibility or real life experience to ever get another job outside of working at the counter at McDonalds or as a Wal-Mart greeter the rest of his life. This is also wrong, Meltzer has a journalism degree & was doing sports writing before the Observer. *followed up by a bunch of nonsense about bullying and passion and BS* While I don’t have a personal relationship with JBL to speak of, I have no reason to believe he has done or said anything that exceeds any rib that came before him. And while a great number of souls have spoken out against JBL such as Blue Meanie, Todd Grisham, Joey Styles, Justin Roberts, John Morrison and Simon Dean, many more such as Ron Simmons, Teddy Long, Bruce Prichard, Jim Cornette, Jim Ross, Vince McMahon and even my own mother Helen have always spoke glowingly of him. So he doesn't have any first hand knowledge of the situation, and basically everyone who praises JBL isn't in a position where JBL could possibly give them any s***. It hasn’t been Mauro complaining publicly about this issue. Only the gossip queens have publicly complained as Mr. Ranallo honestly has more dignity and bigger fish to fry. Mauro has more or less acknowledged it as have his close friends.

So if I become a wrestler, travel 300 days a year, and I abduct Smith Heart, and reenact the film Misery with me playing the role of Kathy Bates and he's James Caan, is that totally OK if it's just cause I'm blowing off some steam? In all my years I have never seen a Kathy Bates post on GameFaqs, that movie was sick but well done. My mom is what led me to her.
