Mick Foley doesn't have health insurance

From The Mick's Facebook.....

ABOUT THAT HIP OPERATION

I guess I should've said something when I started getting prayers and well wishes from friends and colleagues alike – including some of the biggest names in the business. I have definitely mentioned that I needed a hip replacement, definitely mentioned that I intended to get one sometime early in 2017, but never actually set a date. I have this little tiny problem in that I don't actually have health insurance.

I had health insurance for 26 years, but the last four years have been tough – with companies sending out letters telling me they will no longer be insuring families, and that I needed to find alternate insurance. By 2016 health insurance was particularly confusing, and after missing one payment, I found myself no longer insured. I am doing my best to be insured in 2017, but nothing is guaranteed, and I have no idea how this new insurance company will feel about replacing a hip that clearly should've been replaced many years ago.

For those wondering why the general manager of Raw needs to procure his own health insurance: well, I'm on a handshake deal. I do the job as long as I enjoy it and feel like I am making a difference, and I do it as long as WWE is happy with me and thinks I'm the best person for the role. No contract involved at all, except for the legends deal, which is strictly about merchandise. For those wondering why I just don't pay out-of-pocket, well it's a $60,000 operation, and I am going to look at some other options before I shell out 60K for an operation. Maybe I will concentrate on landing a couple of TV or film roles and get the far superior AFTRA insurance to take care of the operation. I probably should not be talking about it at all – but the word is out there, and I feel like I owe people an explanation.

Luckily, I am used to the constant pain – and it's not like I wasn't warned by almost every guy in the wrestling business that the moves I was doing as a younger man were going to come back to haunt me. Well, they're haunting me! The weight-loss has helped considerably; without it, and the DDP yoga, I don't believe I could even get through airports. But the constant travel means constant pain. I love being the Raw GM, and I will miss it when it's gone. But my quality of life will probably improve when Stephanie and WWE decide to go in a new direction.

Thank you for your prayers and concern. I am coming off an amazing December, during which I created some memories that I know I will hold onto for a lifetime. I know a lot of people don't get my whole Santa thing. I can only tell you that when that red suit goes on, the very best part of me comes out, and I do some things I am very proud of each December. I had wanted most of December off, but I had made a commitment to the Pittsburgh Children's Hospital, and it meant a lot to me to fulfill that commitment. Then Mr. McMahon said something to me about a shark cage in question with Chris Jericho suspended above it, and I knew I had to be at that Raw. I missed Monday's raw. I should be back for almost every episode until that moment comes when/if the company decides to go in a different direction. If they do, I will simply be grateful for every single day I had a chance to go out and try to make a difference. Some nights I was more successful than others. But deep down I think the superstars in the back know I was doing my best to look out for them - and they know that has not always the case when it comes to the people who fill these roles.

With or without a new hip I'm going to lead a good life. The medical sciences out there to help me lead a life with far less pain. I hope that I am given the opportunity to take advantage of the new technology. Maybe some enterprising orthopedic specialist can think outside the box and look at me as a potential poster-boy for their services. If The Rock can sell tires, then I have to believe I can sell hip replacements.

Have a nice day.

That's some handshake deal. Why would he work a full time schedule without being a full time employee?

I wonder if DB is on the same type of deal?

Also, any healthcare reform done by any party was never going to give any help to independent contractors.

Bryan had said that he's under contract until next year, otherwise he would be wrestling elsewhere.

Having health insurance is great though. I I have simultaneous bronchitis and pneumonia right now, and don't know what I'd do if I couldn't have gone to the doctor

By the way, these old fogeys who operate with these"good will" contracts, and these "handshake" contracts are huge chumps.

I understand wanting to be loyal to the people who gave you your big break and all that mumbo-jumbo, but you have to look out for yourself. You always have to look out for yourself first and foremost, especially when you're old and falling apart like Mick

Foley literally states his contract means he can walk away whenever he wants, its got nothing to do with loyalty, it's simply a nice little short term earner.

Maybe the great CM Quitter will tell you next how to read and comprehend posts.

Yeah that's too bad for Mick. It sounds like he does have the money to cover it but is just being frugal, which is his choice, I guess.

I wonder if that means his kids are also uncovered? Don't know if his wife works and if she covers them separately?

I remember Roddy Piper and a few other wrestlers talking about how useful it is to get acting gigs so you can get SAG insurance. I have no idea how one would qualify for that, but hopefully Mick can do that, as he mentioned.

It also taxes people who don't have health insurance for more than three months. I know someone who is going to be nailed with a penalty of about $600 - $700 come tax time because he didn't have health insurance for 5 months this year.... and that's on the cheap end because he is single.

He would get the penalty REGARDLESS of whether he made it public or not. Come tax time, the health insurance company is going to mail him something which shows that he was uninsured for more than three months. They also send something to the IRS. The LOWEST penalty for 2016 is between $600 - $700. Foley might end up owing about $3,000 - $5,000 if the rest of his family members are uninsured AND his kids are still of the age where they could still be under his insurance (if he had any), about early 20's for some health insurance.

I just looked up that Noelle Foley (his daughter) is 23 years old. If she has no insurance of her own AND Foley still claims her as a dependent on his taxes (which is possible since there are laws saying that if the child is 24 and younger and taking college classes part-time or full, you can claim them as a dependent. Granted, I haven't the slightest clue if Noelle is in grad school for her masters or still trying to complete her B.S), then Mick is going to get hit with a very big penalty.

Only problem is, doesn't the IRS take the penalty directly out from the Tax refund? Could be a problem trying to get that money back if Trump doesn't stop the penalty bullshit beforehand (I'd imagine there will be lots of politicians trying to stop him).

Well we need to start with regulating these costs they try to charge for simple shit. An ambulance ride is 700 dollars? Fuck that

I'm in the same boat as you are. LMAO. I didn't have healthcare for about six months during 2016, so I'm going to get a penalty (and I think it's bullshit I gotta pay several hundreds of dollars).
Only problem is, doesn't the IRS take the penalty directly out from the Tax refund? Could be a problem trying to get that money back if Trump doesn't stop the penalty bullshit beforehand (I'd imagine there will be lots of politicians trying to stop him).

The whole thing is a mess. Honestly, BOTH the Democrats and Republicans fucked everything up in regards to the healthcare thing (they contributed in different ways, but they all fucked it up). I do NOT like Obamacare at all (for several reasons), but I don't want to go back to BEFORE Obamacare either (as you pointed out, a LOT of people are going to be screwed when they get rid of it. Youtuber Boogie2988 comes to mind as one example). Honestly, we need something NEW that hasn't been done in the U.S yet in regards to healthcare because what we have now and what we had before is broken.

Where the fuck do you live that an ambulance is only $700?!

Shit I've seen bills rung up like that for consultation.

To be fair, I've heard of a quite a few idiots who have called for an ambulance when it wouldn't have really been that big a deal to just get a friend or relative to give them a ride to the hospital.

Yeah he left a comment on the original Facebook post too. He has several options, and I never got the impression he was asking for money or starting a pity party. Just explaining the weirdness around his schedule and reported hip operation for anyone who was asking.

Maybe he shouldn't have mentioned he doesn't have insurance. You don't say those things without trying to invoke a little sympathy.

He wasn't trying to get sympathy, simply explaining his reasoning for missing shows and so people will know what he is up too. Don't want people think he is getting an abortion now.

Why doesn't he just go to like Germany and get the surgery. I'm sure it's top notch and not as expensive over there.

He probably assumed that everybody knew that he could afford to pay out of pocket if he had to.

He's not asking for money or setting up a GFM. He's simply stating he's considering all his options in regards to getting his insurance back.
