- Batista was older than CM Punk in his MMA fight, yet seemed much more impressive
Batista fought a fat can as well in Vince Lucero, but at least unlike Mike Jackson, Lucero actually has MMA experience and most of his losses were to actual UFC veterans and legitimate fighters such as Roy Nelson, Tim Sylvia, Tim Hague, Lavar Johnson, Soa Palelei, Brad Imes, Eric Prindle, etc.
Batista is like CM Punk in that he didn't have an impressive amateur background like Brock Lesnar did, and yet looked WAY more comfortable than CM Punk in the striking and grappling departments - and he got into the sport at an even later age than CM Punk did. Do you think CM Punk had octagon jitters and the bright lights of the UFC got to him, or is he really legitimately that awful even for a beginner?

Batista has a legitimate purple belt under Cesar Gracie and is a thousand times more skilled than CM Punk. Plus Batista is from a really ghetto hood in DC and has been getting in scraps his entire life.
And unlike in Batista's case, Punk's camp was using Punk as a money grub. Listen to Thug Rose and Pat Barry talk about Duke Roufus... the dude has a bit of a shady reputation. And Duke's former star pupil Anthony Pettis is operating a fucking pyramid scheme. Tons of questionable personalities there.

Does anyone remember CM Punk telling Ariel Helwani that he knows he could take Batista in a grappling match? CM Punk is lucky that Batista is as chill as he is, because most people in the BJJ community getting shit talked by a straight amateur - and ESPECIALLY someone given a purple belt by Cesar Gracie - would've challenged Punk's ass to meet him at Submission Underground. And unlike Mike Jackson, Batista would not spend the entire fight taunting, he would just straight wreck Punk's shit.

And most WWE stars who are legitimate heavyweights a la Batista, The Rock, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, etc. actually are damn good athletes for their size, if nothing else. Batista was able to utilize this in his fight.
Punk at 170 is a fucking atrocious athlete for an MMA fighter, lacking any semblance of explosiveness or quickness. This combined with him being grossly undertrained made him probably the worst MMA fighter in the modern era. |
It's cool that Punk got to live his dream and have a reall MMA fight and all but he should have had an opponent that had the same zero amount of fighting background as he did.
Was Punk getting sued before or after his first fight? Did he sacrifice his health for a pay check to cover his legal bills?
You can't grasp the true form of TheGM's post.

Punk shouldn't have tried to start in the UFC. He should have tried to get some minor fights first to get some experience and learn that way. The first guy he fought in UFC actually turned out to not be shit. I know Gall lost to Randy Brown, but he beat Sage Northcutt. Mike Jackson doesn't belong in UFC and neither does Punk. The only reason this fight was on the main card was because of CM Punk's name being a draw.

Batista is an actual athlete
CM Punk is just some guy that got lucky one time |
Guy bought into his own wrestling gimmick and actually thought he was athletic and really knew how to fight. He was wrong on both accounts.
Even in the WWE. Dudes jumping knees, flying elbow, etc, always looked mad sloppy.

Joe Schilling was on Joe Rogan's podcast and they spoke on this: CM Punk looks bad even for a novice who has 5-6 years on his belt. He looks bad even for a 40 year old.
He just doesn't have any talent for the sport. It's not about his experience level or who he trains with, it's him. Some people just aren't meant to do certain things. I am a CM Punk fan and will certainly watch if he does fight again, and I won't hate on him if he does, but I just don't see him making some massive improvements. |
Batista is more capable than Punk but Punk had a far better opponent

There are people in wrestling who you see and can say, "they could have done MMA." Bryan is one, Kendrick, a few others come to mine who are currently in WWE. Sheamus probably could have done some. Taker, obviously, would have been a freak of nature in his 20s. Then you've got Punk, who isn't athletic even.

As far as I know Batista, much like CM Punk, had no prior martial arts experience. He is a guy I would have loved to seen get into MMA at a younger age. Along with Kurt Angle.

Like I said in an earlier post, most WWE stars who are actual Heavyweights are very athletic for their size. There are a few exceptions, but these are all guys who are very mobile for their weight. And it's worth noting that Batista (who weighs a little less than 290ish) actually had to cut to 265 for no reason because his fight ended up being at Super Heavyweight after his original opponent backed out at the last second. Punk however isn't mobile at all for a Welterweight. |
