Claims Big Dave might have terrible opinions but his facts are usually correct and that he corrects himself if he is wrong.

Do you agree?

I don't hate Meltzer, he's one of the best workers in the businsess because he's one a single digit number of people who the fans still believe isn't fake.

But I get why people do hate him, the whole reporting gossip as news, the whole "According to sources." "Some say that." "Potentially" and "Plans Change" attatched to the rumors and the whole anti WWE pro Japan bias... Guy says whatever he needs to say to sell his dirtsheet. Not real news, just what sells. Yet is viewed as a legit guy and not someone shilling a product.

People resent a tabloid being treated as a broadsheet more than they resent Meltz personally I think.

It's like Alex Jones. I don't hate him but I can see why people do.

It's because Dave "BIG RIG" Meltzer behaves as if he's still relevant in an age when "insider information" is so readily available, true or otherwise, from anywhere and everywhere. Unfortunately, he still has patrons that subscribe to him for God knows what reason and as soon as people realize he's no longer a necessary component in professional wrestling the sooner he can fade away like he should have done, at least ten years ago.

He's a very good reporter. Terrible opinions. People confuse the two.

Meltzer talks in such a condescending/know-it-all/smark tone it makes me wanna beat the shit out of him and I bet the only reason Cornette is backing him up is because he hates Russo.

He’s a reporter/insider just like any sports insider. It’s like complaining about Adrian Woj for reporting basketball news and rumours. Dave reports news and share his opinions on stuff just like any other wrestling fan, but he’s so good at getting these wrestling insider infos compared to any other wrestling insider

Edit: Name one person who’s better at reporting wrestling news than Dave. You can’t

See, this is the mentality I'm speaking of. Until Dave's patrons realize he ultimately doesn't matter, and that they can procure their own information independently, he'll continue to be an undead entity in the business.

I don’t hate him but just suddenly I noticed topics “Dave Meltzer says.....” over and over and I had no idea who this Dave Meltzer guy was. One day I’m just like “Dave Meltzer says a lot of things.” I think I got called triggered for that. Also as a joke I once did the Eminem line “and Dave Meltzer said, nothing you idiots. Dave Meltzer is dead he’s locked in my basement.” Don’t remember what the consequences of that was if any.

I can’t hate a guy I don’t know in fact from what I hear he’s a genius. From what I understand people give him 10.99 for a subscription where he gives them inside scoops that may or may not come to be. So basically people give him money for possible spoilers. That’s genius keep doing it Dave, if it don’t make dollaz it don’t make sense.

people don't subscribe to dave for just for scoops, he's a reporter. most of what he provides are reviews of shows, opinions and insight on incoming wrestling and mma stuff. there's scoopy stuff occasionally because he does have backstage connections all over the place, but that isnt the main draw. neither are the star ratings which you will never even see unless you read the newsletter. only in wrestling would we have people freaking out about a guy who's nine times out of ten basically just reporting the news

and a f4w sub doesn't just get you access to dave podcasts, it gives you several decades of old reporting material and backstage info, and archives of a shittton of different podcasts going back to like 2007. probably the best investment as far as internet subscriptions that i've ever spent on because it gives me a ridiculous amount of back content and they update every other day with so much shit i'm never gonna run out

The fuck? Nobody is comparing him to an entity. I’m just saying that he’s the Adrian Woj of wrestling but there hasn’t been much wrestling reporters that are credible like him. Of course it’s important as wrestling fans to do their own independent research and get their own info, but it’s not totally insane to think he’s one of the best wrestling reporters out there. And yes, you can choose to ignore him and yes his opinions don’t matter(like seriously who cares about his stupid 5stars ratings). All I’m saying that he’s a guy that’s very good at his job.

Like think about all of the reporters of your favourite sports. I use Adrian Woj as an example because I’m a big basketball fan and I follow it religiously as much as I follow wrestling

People can't procure their own information if that information isn't sourced from somewhere. People in the industry talk to the guy directly.

This situation is almost analogous to before and after the internet happened to game guides. Before, game guides were a deserved and accepted sentiment because if you couldn't figure out what to do, where to go, etc. in a game you could just pay 10 bucks to get the guide and then you were good. But then the internet happened, and with sites like gamefaqs (primarily gamefaqs, arguably) game guides became less and less of a commodity and one that was readily available and easily distributed freely online.

The only small difference is that Dave might have an idea of what's going on, and Dave might have legitimate sources. And this knowledge isn't freely distributed to the public, so it affords him and other dirtsheets a minutia of credibility. But, like any dirtsheet, it's never completely factual and has an element of uncertainty. He even catch phrased this, "plans change." That's the thing with dirtsheets, the information is never guaranteed to be accurate. But I digress, dirtsheets are a dime a dozen and just because one reporter might have a better chance of being accurate, he'll never be 100% completely on the mark which is why it's so strange to me that people lend any actual gravitas to this one dude at all. Reputability doesn't defer people from freely passing his predictions around on the internet.

As mentioned in a post above, at least with a subscription to f4w you're getting tangible, legitimate knowledge that's accrued over the years. As well as commentary for current and past shows. Still, Dave's a relic and somehow he's managed to avoid succumbing to obsolescence.

I find it weird that gameguides are actually more expensive now that they’re unnecessary compared to when they were very important.

I'd wager it's one part collection and one part novelty. The last game guide I ever bought was in 2010, and that was for Fallout 3. I didn't need it, but for 20 bucks I got this really neat looking hardback book with a ton of information and photos for comparison. I'm not knocking game guides in the slightest, though. I think they can be a fun read, and again there's the collecting aspect of them.

Parrotshake 2 months ago#18
Yeah, people are mostly buying them for the collection factor now which is why they are printed on high-quality paper and come with exclusive finger puppets, and are $55.

Cool analogy and all though, but there’s a difference between a dude who writes $0.02 per-word articles for Bleacher Report and does all his research on reddit and Meltzer, even though that line is getting thinner.

I indirectly answered it in a previous post. To summarize, Dave is an outlier of the dirtsheets. He's only remaining somewhat relevant because people believe he has "legitimate" sources to WWE, which, while possibly true, don't elevate his importance one bit because the end result is that his work is like every other dirtsheet's work: hearsay. It's all rumor and possibility, potential truths hidden like needles in haystacks of ambivalence and uncertainty.

His relationship with WWE doesn't validate the field he's in.
