With Cena having been gone for so long, Reigns has overtaken him for the No. 1 spot in merchandise sales. It’s weird how news like this will make people so upset and then go into denial. There’s a reason they’re still strong on him as the company’s centerpiece despite crowd reactions. Really, there was a time when Cena was getting booed out of every television taping and his merch sales were through the roof, and he was outdrawing everyone on house shows by a substantial margin, and that point was probably when Vince McMahon stopped paying attention to top faces getting booed. I mean, to a degree, it is "manufactured", though. Most people buying merch at a show, itself, are probably buying stuff for their kids, and kids are an easy market. They'll basically buy into whatever WWE is selling. Push Cena, they want Cena. Push Roman, they want Roman. So, of course Roman's merch is an easy sell, because it's easy to sell to kids.
What bugs me is that kids shouldn't be the ONLY demographic that matters. Yes, WWE is "family friendly", but this isn't a Saturday morning cartoon. There's a wide demographic, and it's silly to go all in on the guy who happens to appeal mostly to children at the expense of everyone else. It's not like pushing others as Roman's equals is going to kill merch sales. So why does there have to only be ONE "top guy"? Just seems dumb. |

I was at Summerslam and surprised at the wide variety and styles of merch they had for wrestlers. There's like 5 Seth Rollins shirts I've never seen before. But I never buy WWE merch so IDK.

Because I've been to multiple house shows and Raw and SmackDowns and they have a pretty decent variety of wrestling merch. Hell, last show I went to had those tacky ass B Team shirts.

They sell nothing but Reigns stuff so no one else can sell anything and then they used those sales numbers to justify Roman's push.
