Quintana88: Dave Meltzer

He reports random things people tell him in an industry where the truth is not very clear. With stuff like the AJ story, it is entirely possible plans did change or someone just lied to him to misdirect him.

Other times, he's literally speculating right alongside the rest of us. He'll even say, I don't actually know this, but I'm just guessing based on what I know. Which is what you and I do.

But, he also gets shit right, and people occasionally tell him the truth when it benefits them. He's been writing about the Mauro situation for weeks and it looks like the exact story he told is what happened in real life.

So yeah I think people just need to understand what they're getting from Meltzer. Having now read some of his newsletters, I don't think he's just making stuff up to misdirect people. If he's guessing, he'll say he's guessing. If he has some inside info, he'll say so. Whether or not you value that setup is entirely up to you.

The comparison to Woj is interesting.
Sports reporters acknowledge all the time that teams will feed them information that isn't totally true to influence the market. They might say theyre interested in trading a guy they actually would never trade, only because they want to send a message to that player. That's apparently what happened recently with the Richard Sherman trade rumors. So yeah, shit happens when you're a reporter. You just do the best job you can to clarify when a rumor is a rumor or when you're just speculating.
