Hey guys, sorry for being a few hours late – I’ve been super busy, but that’s okay because - it’s that time of the week again where I give Wreddit a retrospective list of matches from a certain superstar, over the last couple of weeks I made several lists of Essential Career Matches for wrestlers such as: John Cena, Undertaker, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler, Seth Rollins, CM Punk , AJ Styles, The Miz and Shawn Michaels.
This week we’re doing arguably one of the greatest Cruiserweights of all time, the man that used to Lie, Cheat and Steal - Eddie Guerrero. Thanks to everyone that voted him being this weeks list, there will be another poll at the end for next weeks superstar. These collection of matches comes from Dave Meltzer (his matches feature his ratings for matches rated 3 ½ Stars and matches that I believe that are also good too (these matches will be included in honourable mentions). If you have any suggestions for matches that could be included simply privately message me or add a comment on this and I will considerate it. Please read the entire list before commenting saying I’ve forgotten a match when it’s already on the Honourable Mentions. Also since a few people have commented on these posts saying 'stop throwing lists at us with no information' so on a few matches I’ve added a little bit of a backstory for new fans/fans of who haven’t seen the matches, some match details do contain spoilers so you have been warned, but really if you’re getting up in arms about a match spoiler from several years ago that’s not my problem. I have also tried to add a link to each match as well, videos come from either WWE Network, YouTube and Daily Motion. Lastly, and most importantly, I used Meltzer’s ratings as a guide but make sure to make your own opinion (or rating in this case) about the matches. Just cause he gives something a 3, doesn't mean that it isn't a 5 to you! If you do not like this list because I’ve based it off ratings, that is not my problem. Alright, now lets start what will most likely be the biggest list I compile:
1994:
- Black Tiger II Vs Wild Pegasus – NJPW Super J Cup ’94 – 4* - This match was shown on the Guerrero and Benoit individual DVD’s from 2004, and it was one of the first times that international fans got to have a glimpse of what was to come from these to wrestlers. You’ll see plenty of Guerrero Vs Benoit matches on this list and it just goes to show how great each competitor was.
- Eddie Guerrero, Blue Panther, La Parka & Psicosis Vs El Hijo Del Santo, Jushin Thunder Liger, Octagon & Tiger Mask III - AAA TripleMania II-B - 4 ½*
- Eddie Guerrero & Art Barr Vs El Hijo Del Santo & Octagon - WCW/AAA When Worlds Collide 1994 - 5* - Eddie’s only five star match in his career, and making this list it was actually fun to rewatch this match and to let these wrestlers showcase their fantastic abilities, highly recommend.
1995:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Dean Malenko – ECW 26/08/1995 – 3 ¾* - The infamous 2 Out of 3 Falls match between two of the best, the ravenous ECW fans chanting ‘Please don’t go’ just goes to show the passion that they had for these two wrestlers. Everyone should watch this match.
1996:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Ric Flair – WCW Nitro 20/06/1996 – 3 ¾* - *Unless I'm wrong, and can't remember this is their first match together and from watching it about a week ago, it still holds up as great. These two worked well with each other in WCW, their WWE stuff is kinda underrated but there isn't much honestly. Their backstage comedy segments at the Rumble '05 is a classic.
1997:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chris Jericho – WCW Fall Brawl 1997 – 3 ¾* - One of the first matches between these two on WCW PPV, and it’s a really decent match which was recently highlighted on the ‘Cruiserweight Anthology’ Collection on WWE Network. Everyone should watch these two men put on a classic.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio – WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 – 4 ¾* - This match deserved the rating it gets, it’s so fast paced and action packed and the innovation that these two wrestlers brought into American mainstream wrestling can be really shown throughout this match.
1998:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Billy Kidman – WCW Starrcade 1998 – 3 ½* - Billy Kidman wasn’t really one of the main wrestlers in WCW, nor was he a big time competitor in WWE, but for me I’ve always thought he was an excellent wrestler and would be a fantastic wrestler. This was one of the first matches I watched of his and I’m glad this match got the rating it got by Meltzer.
2001:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chris Jericho Vs Chris Benoit Vs X-Pac – No Way Out 2001 – 3 ½* - By 2001, several of the WCW Cruiserweights had made the move from WCW to WWF, and they were getting more opportunities and spotlight then ever in WCW. All four of these men were former WCW stars and they got put on an underrated classic with each other.
2002:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rob Van Dam – Raw 27/05/2002 – 4* - Eddie was released from WWF quietly in 2001, and when he returned in 2002 he had one thing in sight and that was the Intercontinental Championship. Him and Van Dam were involved in feud for a couple of months and this is their best match together in a Ladder Match. Also infamous for the spot of a fan in the audience coming into the ring and attempting to push Eddie off the ladder.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Edge – Smackdown 24/09/2002 – 4 ½* - This feud is very underrated I rarely see people discuss it, they put on excellent matches with each other and this one is probably their best one – they compete in a hellacious No Disqualification on Smackdown.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio – Smackdown 12/11/2002 – 4 ¼* - *Before their Wrestlemania 21 classic, we got this Smackdown classic between the two - which quite frankly I don't see much people talk about. It's very good and I highly recommend this underrated/unknown gem.
- Los Guerreros Vs Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle Vs Edge & Mysterio – Survivor Series 2002 – 3 ½* - This match was seen to be the big blow off for the ‘Smackdown Six’. All 6 men in this match were some of the greatest highlights from Smackdown 2002, as you can see from 2002 onwards on this list you can see that these 6 men put on great, continuous match with each other. This was also Los Guerreros first WWE Tag Team Championship win.
2003:
- Los Guerreros Vs Charlie Hass & Shelton Benjamin – Smackdown 04/02/2003 – 4* - This was another reason why Smackdown really was the dominant brand in 2002-2004, they had a fantastic tag-team division to go along with their Main Eventers & Cruiserweights. You have two veterans in the Guerrero's and add the talented rookies of Hass & Benjamin and you get instant classic almost every time.
- Eddie Guerrero & Tajiri Vs Charlie Hass & Shelton Benjamin – Smackdown 01/07/2003 – 3 ¾* - This was their final match in their series after good matches but plenty of screwy finishes and undetermined wins, The World's Greatest Tag Team would secure the win and recapture their WWE Tag Team Championships.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chris Benoit – Vengeance 2003 – 4* - These two are best friends, who just love professional wrestling, staggering throughout tiny promotions, all the way to the big wrestling world of Japan, back to America in companies such as ECW & WCW finally to make it to WWE. This match was the final for the tournament for the inaugural WWE United States Championship. This is close to five stars for me, if this match didn’t include a screwy finish I would award it that. But don’t disregard that as anything bad at all. I actually made a post discussing this match a few months ago, feel free to look at it here if you’d like. This is my favourite match between the two.
2004:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Brock Lesnar – No Way Out 2004 – 4* - (I’m gonna steal a quote/paraphrase from Scott Hall) Dreams do come true, hard work does pay off and bad times don’t last and that was true for Eddie Guerrero. Eddie Guerrero wins the big one against Brock Lesnar. Ignore the interferences and all that nonsense; this is just a special moment for everyone who saw Eddie Guerrero overcome his addictions.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Kurt Angle – Wrestlemania XX – 4* - These two got to be one of the main events of the 20th Wrestlemania and it’s really decent match; fantastic back and forth chain wrestling with each other. What makes this match better for me is that it’s a classic Guerrero style win – Lie, Cheat, Steal.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs John Bradshaw Layfield – Smackdown 15/07/2004 – 3 ½* - This was the final match between the two competitors for the WWE Championship, after a screwy finish Guerreo would lose the title a week or so prior. This was meant to be settled inside of a steel cage match, and in typical Eddie fashion he uses his latino heat and performs a great frog splash from the top of the cage. However, the end marks the return of one of his earlier foes from the year and prevents him from winning the match.
2005:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio – Judgment Day 2005 – 3 ¾* - By time this match had come around Eddie Guerrero had become a fully fledged heel once again because of the fact that he couldn’t beat Mysterio in a match. A bloody and brutal rivalry played out right before our eyes – one of the best feuds from that year.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio – Smackdown 09/09/2005 – 3 ½* - The final match in their feud with each other and they’re both placed in a steel cage. I wont reveal who wins but I definitely recommend everyone watches this match, if you’d like to see the final match in this feud.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Batista – No Mercy 2005 – 3 ½* - Before Guerrero passed away, he was entering a feud with Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship, actually his last PPV he main evented for the championship on his birthday. Very nice and fitting, good matches that helped establish Batista as an even bigger star.
Honourable Mentions:
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chavo Guerrero – WCW Bash at the Beach 1998 - This was during their feud and the stipulation for this match was that it was a ‘Hair Vs. Hair match’.
- Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko & Perry Saturn Vs Chyna, Grandmaster Sexay & Scotty 2 Hotty - Wrestlemania 2000- Guerrero’s first Wrestlemania.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Dean Malenko Vs Perry Saturn - Judgment Day 2000 - Guerrero’s first championship win in the WWF.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chyna Vs Kurt Angle – Raw 04/09/2000 - Guerrero’s first Intercontinental Championship win.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Stone Cold Steve Austin – Smackdown 16/11/2000 - It’s nice to see that even the top WWF Wrestler would still face newcomers to the company such as Eddie Guerrero.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio Vs CM Punk – IWA South 2002 - This match takes place in a weird time for wrestling – Punk was killing the independents, Mysterio had left WCW and had a few months until he started at WWE and Guerrero had been released from WWE but was set to return in a month or so. Punk regards that he thought he knew everything about wrestling and was one of the best at this point.. until he faced Guerrero to which he realised he knew barely anything and was nothing compared to Guerrero. I would’ve loved (and I think most people would’ve) to see a Guerrero/Punk match in the WWE
- Eddie Guerrero Vs The Rock – Raw 22/07/2002 - Much like the Stone Cold match earlier on this list, it was good to see top WWE stars wanting to face Guerrero. The lead up to this match had a fantastic promo between the two and then it all came together in the main event of Raw.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Chavo Guerrero – Royal Rumble 2004 - WWE loves doing personal family matches, and this match saw Eddie who had to deal with Chavo turning on him, thankfully he overcome the odds and won the match.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Triple H – Raw 22/03/2004 - For the life of me I can’t remember if these two have had any other matches with each other, but during the 2004 Draft with Triple H drafted to Smackdown I was actually hyped for a feud with these two, unfortunately that didn’t last more than a day because Triple H was drafted back a day later.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs John Bradshaw Layfield – The Great American Bash 2004 - The end of Guerrero’s WWE Championship reign.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Rey Mysterio – Wrestlemania 21 - A perfect way for a Wrestlemania opening match, two great wrestlers who were tag team champions face off one on one in a ‘Face Vs Face’ match just to see the best was and it allows the seeds to be planted for the rest of their feud.
- Eddie Guerrero Vs Mr. Kennedy – Smackdown 2005 - Unfortunately this was Guerrero’s last televised match, but in classic Guerrero fashion he won by doing what he does best – Lying, Cheating & Stealing.
Unfortunately on the morning of November 13th 2005, Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room due to heart failure by his nephew, Chavo Guerrero. He was 38 years old, on November 13th 2016; it’ll be 11 years since Eddie passed away. Following the news of his death WWE’s two weekly shows Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown dedicated both shows to him by doing ‘Tribute to Eddie Guerrero’ episodes. You can watch them here:
