1993:
- Rey Misterio Jr., Super Calo & Winners Vs Heavy Metal, Picudo & Psicosis - AAA 29/01/1993 - This would Rey’s first 5 star match and so early into his career.
1994:
1995:
- Rey Misterio Jr. Vs Psicosis – ECW 07/10/1995 – 4 ¾* - This match became an underground phenomenon back in the day; everyone wanted to see this match and from what I’ve read online the only way to see it was by tape trading.
1996:
- Rey Misterio Jr. Vs Juventud Guerrera – ECW Big Ass Extreme Bash – Night 2 – 5* - Misterio & Guerrera had fabulous chemistry with each other and you’ll see that by how many times both competitors are brought up on this list. (Sorry I can’t find a clear link for this one – if anyone has it please comment and I will add it.)
- Rey Misterio Jr. Vs Psicosis – WCW Bash at the Beach 1996 – 4 ¾* - A masterpiece if I’ve ever seen one, another super underrated or quite possibly forgotten match of Misterio’s.
- Rey Misterio Jr. Vs Jushin “Thunder” Liger – WCW Starrcade 1996 – 3 ¾* - I never saw this match until I made this list because truthfully I never knew they competed against each other. So it was fun to see two masked legends competing each other.
1997:
- Rey Misterio Jr Vs Eddy Guerrero – WCW Halloween Havoc 1997 – 4 ¾* - This match deserved the rating it gets, it’s so fast paced and action packed and the innovation that these two wrestlers brought into American mainstream wrestling can be really shown throughout this match. I think truthfully this match will go down as one of the best WCW matches of all time – and it’s a shame that these two were relegated to opening the show or mid card for the rest of their WCW careers.
1998:
- Rey Misterio Jr. Vs Billy Kidman Vs Juventud Guerrera – WCW Starrcade 1998 – 4 ½* - You want to talk about underrated WCW matches? Great lets start with this one, no one ever talks about this match when they discuss; best WCW matches, best Cruiserweight matches and hell even best Rey Mysterio matches – this match from start to finish is fast pace and absolutely fun. Please take time to watch this match.
1999:
- Rey Misterio Jr. & Konnan Vs NWO Wolfpack (Kevin Nash & Scott Hall) - WCW SuperBrawl 1999 – 3 ¼* - The stipulation for this match would be that if Misterio’s team lost he would have to remove his mask and if Nash’s team lost they would need to shave their hair off. This match started because Rey was on a hot streak of winning, which even saw him defeat Kevin Nash and he got branded the "Giant Killer" for a period. They would have a one on one match at the following PPV Uncensored.
2001:
2002:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero Vs CM Punk – IWA South 2002 - This match takes place in a weird time for wrestling – Punk was killing the independents, Mysterio had left WCW and had a few months until he started at WWE and Guerrero had been released from WWE but was set to return in a month or so. Punk regards that he thought he knew everything about wrestling and was one of the best at this point.. until he faced Guerrero to which he realised he knew barely anything and was nothing compared to Guerrero. I would’ve loved (and I think most people would’ve) to see a Guerrero/Punk match in the WWE
- Rey Mysterio Vs Kurt Angle – Summerslam 2002 – 3 ¾* - This was Rey Mysterio’s PPV Debut, and he had the challenge of facing Kurt Angle in the opening match of quite possibly one of the best PPV’s. Very fun short and exciting match – I’d say it’s close to one of the best under 10 minute matches of all time.
- Rey Mysterio & Edge Vs Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle – No Mercy 2002 – 4 ¾* - This was the final match in the tournament for the Smackdown Tag Team championships quite frankly its one of the best matches from the Smackdown brand in 2002. The mix of these four wrestlers styles works so good with each other, the endless possibilities of what they could do with each other is unfathomable. If you’re watching for the first time it’s very hard to pick who will win this match, highly recommend. It may have only involved 4 out of the 6 ‘Smackdown Six’ but it just goes to show how great each person was. This is a perfect 5 star match for me.
- Rey Mysterio & Edge Vs Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle – Smackdown 07/11/2002 – 4* - Following No Mercy 2002, Edge and Mysterio were offered rematches for the WWE Tag Team Championships on an episode of Smackdown it was contested in a two out of three falls match; this is an ultimate guilty pleasure of mine because it was one of the first Smackdown matches I ever watched at the time due to limited access to wrestling.
- Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero – Smackdown 14/11/2002 – 4 ¼* - Before their Wrestlemania 21 classic in WWE, we got this Smackdown classic between these two - which quite frankly I don't see much people talk about. It's very good and I highly recommend this underrated match from these two.
- Rey Mysterio & Edge Vs Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle Vs Eddie Guerrero & Chavo Guerrero – Survivor Series 2002 – 3 ½* - This match was seen to be the big blow off for the ‘Smackdown Six’. All 6 men in this match were some of the greatest highlights from Smackdown 2002, if you’ve read my other essential match lists with any of these 6 men you can see in 2002 onwards on this list you can see that these 6 men put on great, continuous match with each other. Highly recommend everyone gets to watch this match – or really this whole PPV in general
2003:
- Rey Mysterio & Billy Kidman Vs Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin – Vengeance 2003 – 4* - During 2003 the tag team division on Smackdown was dominated by The Worlds Greatest Tag Team - Charlie Hass & Shelton Benjamin. This is just one of their great matches, and it also makes me upset that Kidman & Mysterio couldn’t tag more in WWE.
2004:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero – Smackdown 18/03/2004 – 4* - This match was the week of Wrestlemania 20 where Eddie Guerrero had retained his WWE Championship. Many people believed that this would lead to a potential Eddie Vs Rey feud at a couple of PPV’s but quickly enough it was decided by WWE officials that they were going with a Bradshaw push and to be Guerrero’s feud.
2005:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero – Wrestlemania 21 – 3 ¼* - A perfect way for a Wrestlemania opening match, two great wrestlers who were tag team champions face off one on one in a ‘Face Vs Face’ match just to see the best was and it allows the seeds to be planted for the rest of their feud.
- Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero – Smackdown 09/09/2005 – 3 ½* - One of the best feuds of 2005 was Eddie Vs Rey - they were a tag team that loved each other like family. They had a barnburner of a match at Wrestlemania, but slowly the months after it Eddie would turn heel on Rey. From April until September they would face off against each other on Smackdown, Live shows and PPV’s and Rey would ALWAYS win. But not this time, this was their final encounter in a steel cage match, and I absolutely love it.
2006:
- 30 Man Royal Rumble Match – Royal Rumble 2006 – 3 ½* - This would be the peak of Mysterio’s WWE career I believe. He had a great 2002, a decent 2003, a dull year in 2004 and then in 2005 he had a great series of matches with rival (and real life best friend) Eddie Guerrero. Unfortunately, Eddie Guerrero passed away in November of 2005, thus Mysterio would tribute everything he did in wrestling to Eddie. This would include the 2006 Royal Rumble, which he started at number 2 (which he joked that Eddie gave him that number) and lasted the whole way through to win the match.
- Rey Mysterio Vs Kurt Angle Vs Randy Orton – Wrestlemania 22 – 3 ½* - Here we have it, Mysterio’s crowning moment – the ultimate underdog. He would compete against World Heavyweight Champion and former rival Kurt Angle as well as the legend killer Randy Orton (who was originally scheduled to face Angle for the World Championship at Mania). This match was really special since it was dedicated to Eddie Guerrero in his memory and Rey would finally win the ultimate prize at Wrestlemania the World Heavyweight Championship. With Eddie’s nephew and wife being at the show as well made things extra special.
2007:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Chavo Guerrero – Summerslam 2007 – 3* - This match was over a year of build up, it saw Chavo Guerrero turn heel and turn on his friend Rey Mysterio because he was getting all the spotlight due to Eddie’s passing. They would compete in matches near the end of 2006 such as Falls Count Anywhere and ultimately an I Quit match which saw Rey written off TV due to a real injury. He made his returned as a ‘silver-surfer’ type look due to his love of comic books (which he would do in a lot of matches, that I may have failed to mention in this write-up).
2008:
2009:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Chris Jericho – The Bash 2009 – 4 ½* - In 2009, Rey Mysterio would rejuvenise his career a bit after a bit of a slum when he would compete against rival Chris Jericho in a string of great matches which lasted a few months. I feel like this got lost in the shuffle in 2009, especially when people look back on the year specifically when they bring up the bad qualities such as Raw Special Guest GM’s, World Champions swapping every month and the same main three people (Orton, Triple H & Cena) hogging the main event scene. But I plead people to go back and watch the Jericho and Mysterio feud/matches because they are works of art.
- Rey Mysterio Vs Dolph Ziggler – Summerslam 2009 – 3 ¾* - This was still Dolph Zigglers first year as his new persona since leaving the gimmick of a male cheerleader. He got to show off his skills early in his fun with the experienced veteran of Rey Mysterio. This is really Zigglers first high profiled match in WWE.
2010:
- Rey Mysterio Vs Shawn Michaels – Smackdown 29/01/2010 - Shawn Michaels was basically in his ‘farewell tour’ it was his final year in 2010, he was done after Wrestlemania 26, so before he left he would face people he had never faced or rarely faced. This included Rey Mysterio, and there is a call back to a match earlier in this list of Shawn Michaels and Shelton Benjamin. Despite the so/so finish, this was actually a decent match between the two.
- Rey Mysterio Vs The Undertaker – Royal Rumble 2010 – 3 ¾* - This would be the first time that Rey would face Undertaker in his dead-man persona and it is worth the wait in all honesty. These two had good chemistry with each other and it's a very forgotten match before Undertaker would semi retire and go onto having a very limited schedule.
- Rey Mysterio Vs Kane Vs Alberto Del Rio Vs Edge – TLC 2010 – 4 ¼* - This match had four of WWE’s best Smackdown talent in one match, which also included new superstar Alberto Del Rio in the main event. It is significant because not only is it Kane’s last defence is his stellar run in 2010, but because it is Edge’s last World Heavyweight Championship win. (No I don’t include that Smackdown where he was stripped of it at the start and gained it at the end of the show.)
2011:
- Rey Mysterio Vs John Cena – Raw 25/07/2011 – In probably the biggest robbery of Mysterio’s life (and possibly WWE history) Mysterio would finally win the WWE Championship against The Miz after many years, when CM Punk left the WWE with the Championship. However, WWE had plans to rush the CM Punk storyline and needed to speed up the process of a Cena/Punk rematch at Summerslam. So, right after Mysterio won the Champion Cena challenged him to a match.. later that night. Mysterio would lose the WWE Championship just under two hours of winning it, and he would be relegated to doing nothing much for the rest of the year.
2012:
- Rey Mysterio Vs The Miz Vs Cody Rhodes Vs Sin Cara – Night of Champions 2012 – 3 ¼* - Many people looked over this match when they think of great matches in 2012, it’s a pretty decent match between 4 great mid-carders.
2015:
2016:
2017:
2018:
- 30 Man Royal Rumble Match – Royal Rumble 2018 – 4 ¼* - Mysterio would return to WWE after many years away just a couple of days ago and honestly, he looked better than he ever has. He put on a great performance in the match and people will look fondly on him. As of writing this right now there is no rumors of him signing a longer contract; and it seems his Rumble appearance was just a ‘one-off’ situation; but here’s looking to the future.
