She didn't pass their medical back when they first tried to sign her before the MYC so she was told to get cleared and then come back. Now that she's been cleared, they don't want her for whatever reason. Meltzer speculated they don't want to invest in new talent with injury issues or that they feel they have enough Japanese women on the roster.
It's a shame because she's one of the best, if not the best, female wrestlers on the planet. WWE's loss is Stardom's gain (or not loss I guess). She also got (Stardom/possible MYC spoilers)Viper to join Queen's Quest so I guess she isn't WWE bound in the immediate future either I guess. |

While you laughably have women like Sasha and Becky claiming they can wrestle as good as the guys while they perform midriff dropkicks and girlplexes, Shirai on the other hand could legitimately make that claim. She's easily the best female wrestler around, far better than Asuka and even a lot of male talent. What a shame for WWE to not take the risk.

I watched a few of her matches when the announcement of her joining WWE was first made, and while it's disappointing that it won't happen after all, in the long run it's probably better than her getting watered down and/or jobbing out to whoever after she makes her debut.

Other commenters (here and elsewhere) bashing WWE for this and claiming it is a quota thing. Prior statements by Big Dave about Japanese talent and the WWE. Etc.

Fuck that really sucks. After watching some of her work from Stardom and LU, I was really looking forward to her to seeing her have some great matches in WWE with some of the great women wrestlers they hired and run wild with Kairi on NXT.

A developmental contract is no small potatos...they're worth 250 grand and WWE will be revoking many of these verbal agreements before they get inked into guaranteed contracts.

Newell compared to Vanessa Bourne, Bianca Belair or Lacey Evans from the US is quite unique.
Jesus, folks bash WWE for mistreating minorities and foreigners and then are quick to box in folks "We want a black champ....a real black! Rock doesn't count!" "Push/hire diverse, foreign talent...Wales doesn't count!" MYC 32 talent involved. 17 are non-white. 16 are from outside the US. "Not good enough!!!! More Japanese strikers!!!"

Seriously look at the WWE at large. It is diverse as ****.
They have white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Arab, Indian, Pacific Islander talent. They have folks from America, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, China, Switzerland, Australia, NZ, Ghana, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, Bulgaria, Serbia, India, with westerners with Filipino, Iranian, Russian, Syrian, Indian and Pakistani heritage, etc. They have gay talent competing, Christians, Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc. ...I mean sweet damn Jesus. It's like a Benetton ad and folks still complain! |

So, just learned that Kairi Hojo is signed at least for the Mae Young classic. She's more attractive an to me but she never really looks the same since sometimes she looks just ok and sometimes easily above average. Guess it depends on how she does her makeup and hair. Well, I LOVE her elbow drop and wonder if WWE will have her tone it down. Pity all the Japanese female wrestlers are short even for female standards though.
